MENDIP MORRIS MEN OVERSEAS
We believe the Mendip Morris Men to be one of the UK’s most
travelled sides. We’ve been taking the morris abroad almost every year for nearly 25 years. Clevedon, one
of the towns in our area, has strong twinning associations in
France, Germany and Belgium and our first visit was to the German twin
town of Ettlingen near Karlsrühe in the south of the country. Since
then we have also visited the Czech Republic five times with side
trips to Poland and Slovakia. We also believe we're the first morris
side to have danced in the European Parliament building in Brussels.
Strangely enough, most of our trips seem to be conveniently alcohol-related, including Lenten carnivals with the 'wine
witches' in Germany's Mosel region, visits to Epernay, France’s champagne capital, and regular trips to
Middelkerke in Belgium where we dance at the annual beer
festival on the prom!
We have established lasting associations with overseas
folklore clubs – the Ettlinger Rebhexen in Germany and the Odra Dance
Group in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
